Specific Volunteer Opportunities at Local Non-profit Organizations

contact the coordinator nearest you, and they'll tell you more, make the initial introductions and help you get started.
GUARDIANSHIP MONITORING
assure that elders with guardians are having their needs met. Visit and monitor wards of the court in their places of residence. Qualifications include a desire to help vulnerable people and a willingness to work with the public. Although not essential, experience with people with disabilities is a plus. Volunteers are asked to commit for one year and to devote three to four hours a week to the program. Volunteers must be able to drive to wards' residences throughout Grafton County (NH) and the immediate area of the court. (Lebanon, Haverhill, Woodsville, Littleton)

AMERICA READS
volunteer training: April 14 & 21 in Lebanon NH for volunteers serving our southern area. Learn techniques for reading aloud with individual students and groups.
WOODWORKING
build exhibits for natural science museum -- woodshop has great equipment! (Norwich VT.)
simple woodworking projects with Headstart students -- helps the children develop fine motor, listening, and teamwork skills (Enfield NH.)
LITERACY
read aloud with elementary students to give them extra practice time (Lebanon NH; Woodsville NH; Littleton NH.)
tutor prisoners getting their GED (Haverhill NH.)
CLERICAL SUPPORT
provide quality customer service by answering telephones for non-profits -- most everyone would rather talk with a cheerful person than an answering machine!
*at an HIV/AIDS organization (WRJ, VT.)
*for a natural science museum (Norwich VT.)
*in public libraries (Hartford & WRJ, VT; Lebanon, Piermont & Littleton NH.)
*at a community health center (Lebanon NH -- during staff meetings every third Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
*in a retirement community evenings and weekends (Lebanon NH.)
remind patients of mammogram appointments (Lebanon NH -- after noon.)
follow-up telephone calls with LIFELINE clients (Lebanon NH)
data entry 2 hours a month for a local dental clinic (WRJ, VT.)
HANDY PERSON
make small repairs on an on-call basis for a group home serving pregnant & parenting teens; might include small sheet rock repairs, fixing windows, etc. (Lebanon NH.)
help seniors and people with disabilities be able to stay in their homes install insulation, build ramps for people returning from the hospital, fix windows and leaky faucets (Lebanon, Enfield, & Hanover NH.)
POSTERING
help local organizations get the word out about their programs & activities by putting posters up around town:
*for blood drives every 8 weeks (Lebanon NH; WRJ, VT.)
*a local opera house (Upper Valley area in VT & NH.)
*American Lung Association of VT (Woodstock & Hartford VT.)
FRIENDLY VISITORS TO NURSING HOME RESIDENTS
There are lots of neat people with stories to tell, who have had to move into nursing homes for medical care. You can help these residents stay connected, and active --
walk with a delightful woman (Woodstock VT.)
bring a little cheer -- call Bingo (Woodstock & WRJ, VT; Lebanon NH.)
serve coffee during social hour and share news of what's going on in the community (WRJ, VT.)
lead a men's exercise group (Lebanon NH.)
share your interests with others -- slides, story telling, crafts, reading aloud or what-have-you? (throughout our area.)
LOCAL HOSPITALS
serve visitors and hospital staff wonderful food at the coffee shop on Wednesday or Thursday from 2-4 p.m. (Lebanon NH)
wash toys used in the community care waiting room, once a month -- flexible. (Lebanon NH)
distribute current magazines to the waiting rooms so that patients who didn't bring their knitting aren't bored stiff! (Lebanon NH.)
escort patients to their appointments, wheeling them in a wheelchair if needed. (WRJ, VT & Lebanon NH.)
information desk substitutes. (WRJ, VT & Lebanon NH.)
HOME DELIVERED MEALS
help frail adults be able to remain at home -- use your own vehicle to deliver meals prepared by local senior centers, during the weekdays; if you don't drive -- consider being a runner -- some of the drivers aren't able to get up & down stairs, etc. so they like to team up with non-drivers (throughout our area.)
TRANSPORTATION
drive people to medical appointments; serve on an on-call basis; use your own vehicle; some opportunities for mileage reimbursement. Training required, through AARP 55 Alive or other safety programs; free to transportation volunteers. Must also pass department of motor vehicles record check. (throughout our entire area.) Next training: January 26 & 28 in Canaan NH.
provide transportation to people who are blind so they can do the simple things many of us take for granted -- go to the pharmacy, grocery shopping, the library, concerts, etc. (WRJ & Woodstock VT.)
INTERNET
compile bibliographies of internet resources for public library patrons to use (Lebanon NH.)
teach others how to use the internet to send email and surf the net. (Lebanon NH.)
MUSICIANS
entertain people at nursing homes -- bring back memories with music (Woodstock VT; WRJ, VT; Lebanon NH; Hanover NH; Haverhill NH; Franconia NH.)
share your passion for music with the next generation -- play in day care centers, at Headstart programs, and elementary schools. (Enfield, Lebanon, & Littleton NH.)
TEACH DECISION MAKING
(2 day training required; cost: $25; six week committment;
-- next training in Feb 1999.)
with inmates (North Haverhill NH.)
with pregnant & parenting teens (Lebanon NH.)
as a part of a reparative probation program (WRJ, VT.)
