Here is the answer for Where in the Valley...? for November 19 to December 6, 2002

Shattuck Observatory, Hanover, Claremont

Shattuck Observatory near the Bema at Dartmouth College is one of the oldest scientific buildings on the campus, dating from 1853. According to frank Gado, the rotating dome "... rides on cannonballs." which must be a pretty interesting mechanism.

Lots of correct answers; among the first were Travis Greatorex, Rick Goodwin, Blodgett's Sash & Door, John Creagh, Tim Ferguson, and Becky Luce.

The building is on the route of the Dartmouth College walking tour; more information at http://www.dartmouth.edu/~tour/walking/14shattuck.html.
