''Phishing'' Scams

We're noticing a lot of PHISHING scams recently. Scammers will send out emails that appear to be coming from your bank, credit card company, online credit company (like PayPal) or other financial organization, asking you to "confirm your account number and passwords". If you enter your information, it is actually sent to someone who will be using it for criminal activities.

  • If you get an email or pop-up message that asks for personal or financial information, do not reply or click on the link in the message...
  • Don't email personal or financial information...
  • Review credit card and bank account statements as soon as you receive them to determine whether there are any unauthorized charges...
The Federal Trade Commission has more dos and don'ts. Visit their How Not to Get Hooked by a 'Phishing' Scam webpage for more information.
NEW... We've also heard that there are scams where people are being called on the telephone to "confirm their voter registration information" and are being asked for personal information. Again, the FTC site may offer the best information on these other phishing scams.
