''Nimda'' virus

September 2001There is an Internet virus/worm that targets web servers and certain Windows machines. Known as Nimda, it is so new that anti-virus programs are not yet able to prevent infection.
For more information visit the Nimda hits both Windows and Web systems alike page or the Home PCs at most risk from Nimda page on the ZDNet site.
One way the virus travels is by e-mail with random text in the subject line, no body text, and an attached file called readme.exe. It is very important that you not open such an attachment if you get it! Once your machine is infected, it will be very hard to remove the problem from your machine, and you risk sending the virus to other people you correspond with.
In general it is good practice not to open any enclosure or attachment sent with email unless you are expecting it, know who it is from, and know what it is. To be absolutely safe, don't open any attachment or enclosure sent to you in an email message.
