Every time you give your email address to someone, or post it on a website, or type it in when you subscribe to a newsletter or something, you run the risk of your email address getting sold to someone who will send you junk mail. Start avaoiding junk email by being careful who you give your email address to.

Many email programs like Outlook Express and Apple Mail have junk mail filters, and you can set them so that they put mail it thinks is junk mail into its trash; see the help documents that came with your email program for more information.
