Our Windows machine connects at startup- what can we do?

Help! When we turn on the computer, we are now getting the dial up connection window right away, even if we didn't ask to go on Internet Explorer. So if we want to do something else, such as word processing, we have to cancel or disconnect from the Internet. How do we keep this from happening when we start up our machine?

It sounds like you have a tcp/ip application loading at startup. This can be anything like AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Real Player or a host of other applications. The best way to stop it from trying to connect and find out which one is the culprit is to go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet | Connections and make sure the box that says Never dial a connection is checked.
