Can I connect to ValleyNet using my Apple Airport?
You can use an Apple Airport unit to connect to your ISP, so that you can remain portable in your home or business while still staying connected to the Internet. It's a known fact that the modems that Apple ships in current models aren't always compatible with the V.90 modem standard, and in any case, like all 56k modems, are quite sensitive to any kind of telephone line noise.
Here are the steps to take to set up your Airport:
This document assumes that you have already followed Apple's instructions to configure your AirPort Base Station for use with your AirPort-equipped Macintosh computer. If you have not, please do so first.
Launch the AirPort Admin Utility (it should be located in the AirPort folder in your Apple Extras folder, or in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder).
-
Select your Base Station from the list and click Configure.
-
Type in the Base Station password if there is one.
Click on the Internet tab.
Change the Connect using popup menu to 'Modem (V.90)' if it's not already set. Note: If you have problems connecting to ValleyNet's digital lines with your Base Station, try setting the Connect using option to 'Modem (V.34)'. This will force your Base Station to connect at 33.6 Kbps instead of 56 Kbps.
For Main number and Alternate number, type in one of your ISP's dial-up numbers
For Username, type in your username.
Click the Change password... button and type in your ValleyNet password twice to confirm it. Click the OK button when you've done that.
Change the Disconnect if idle option to 5 or 10 minutes. Note: There is a bug in the AirPort software where if you keep an Internet application such as Netscape Navigator or BlitzMail open, the Base Station will not disconnect. It is always a good idea to click the Disconnect button in the AirPort application when you're done with the Internet.
10. Leave the Modem country code option set to United States.
Change the Login script option to Send login, password, ppp.
Leave the DNS servers option, and the Domain name option blank.
Make sure that the IP address, Subnet mask and Router address options all say "". The first and last options vary depending on what telephone number you try to connect to.
Click the Update button to restart your Base Station and apply the changes. If you think you've made a mistake, click the Cancel button and repeat the process starting at Step 2.
You're done! When you want to go onto the Internet, open up an Internet application or
click the Connect button in the AirPort application.
