How do I set up the Location Manager on a Mac?
The Location Manager allows you to save a variety of configurations (i.e., IP/TCP settings, default printers, even Time Zones). This makes it very easy to configure your Mac to be used from home, an office, and a classroom, or to set up your Mac so that you can dial into two different Internet services if you need to.
We'll use an example of dialing into a "Dial-Up" number and also being able to dial into a "GovNet" number.
Convention: a word followed by > indicates a pull-down menu.
- Click Apple>Control Panel
- Follow across to TCP/IP and let up on the mouse button.
- Click File>Configurations...
- Choose the Default configuration and click Duplicate
- Name this configuration Dial-Up
- Click Make Active
- Set up this TCP/IP window to match the dial-up configuration in your ISP's instructions.
- Click File>Configurations... ; click Save when the program asks if you want to save the changes
- Choose the Default configuration and click Duplicate
- Name this configuration GovNet
- Click Make Active
- Set up this TCP/IP window to match the GovNet instructions
- Close TCP/IP and click Save when asked
- Click Apple>Control Panel
- Follow across to Remote Access and let up on the mouse button
- Click File>Configurations...
- Choose the Default configuration and click Duplicate
- Name this configuration Dial-Up
- Click Make Active
- Set up this Remote Access window to match the dial-up configuration in your ISP's instructions.
- Click File>Configurations... ; save the previous configuration if you are asked
- Choose the Default configuration and click Duplicate
- Name this configuration GovNet
- Click Make Active
- Set up this Remote Access window to match the GovNet instructions
- Close Remote Access and click Save when asked if you would like to save the configuration.
- Click Apple>Control Panels
- Follow across to Location Manager and let up on the mouse button.
- If there is a triangle pointing to "Edit Locations", click on the triangle to open the window
- Click File>New Location...
- Name the new location Dial-Up, and save the new location
- Make sure that the Location Manager window shows Edit Location: Dial-Up
- Put checkmarks next to Appletalk & TCP/IP and Remote Access
- Click File>New Location...
- The program will ask you to save the changes; click on Save
- Name the new location GovNet, and save the new location
- Make sure that the Location Manager window shows Edit Location: GovNet
- Put checkmarks next to Appletalk & TCP/IP and Remote Access
- Close Location Manager and click Save when asked if you would like to save the configuration.
Now you can easily change the settings from one location to the other.
You change the location using the Control Strip that shows at the bottom of your screen (the icon for the Location Manager looks like two pieces of paper with two red arrows pointing to either side). If the Control Strip is not showing, look for a little tab at the lower left or lower right corner of your screen, and click on it. The Control Strip will pop open. If there is no tab, open Apple Menu>Control Panels>Control Strip and click on the button that says Show Control Strip.
You can also open the Location Manager control panel itself to make the change from one location to another.
